Instagram might not be primarily about photography, but @thisaintartschool on Instagram is.

With the community photo project This Ain’t Art School, we want to show that Instagram and traditional photography are not mutually exclusive, but can complement each other. We provide a space to share work taken by people with a discerning eye. We care about the quality of individual images, rather than share in the excitement about what Jeff Wall calls the “transmission system”, a feed that is in constant need of new photographs. Our goal is to break with a recurring pattern where users gear their posts towards getting the most likes.

This Ain‘t Art School was founded in the summer of 2014 by Anika Meier. TAAS runs monthly assignments based on the work of a photographer or on themes. Cooperation partners in the past: C/O Berlin, Deichtorhallen, Fondation Beyeler, Museum Folkwang, Sprengel Museum, Berlinische Galerie, and more. The photographers Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, Peter Bialobrzeski, Heidi Specker and Phil Toledano came up with an assignment.

See you on Instagram or in real life.
